Noël Balthazar, maître horloger in 1717.
With its flower-festooned, serpentined and asymmetrical scrolls of Roman foliage entwined with oak, emblematic of hospitality, this grand cartel clock epitomises the Louis XV 'picturesque' style introduced by Juste-Aurele Meissonier (d. 1750) and relates to a design for a clock in his Oeuvre of 1736, see H. Ottomeyer/P. Pröschel et. al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p. 96, fig. 2a.
