by Pierre-Claude Pottier (fl. 1778-1806), marked, Paris, 1789, with the charge and discharge marks of Jean-François Kalendrin, later struck with Parisian post-1838 restricted warranty marks, the enamels in the manner of Coteau
Oval box, the cover set with an enamel plaque painted en grisaille with Putti mocking a Bacchanalian procession, on an engine-turned vertical coin pattern ground enamelled with translucent blue within borders of gold paillon leaves, simulated pearls and gold bands engraved with chevrons, white surround, the base identically framing a similar scene of Putti in a vain attempt to ride a stubborn goat, the four enamel side panels decorated with blue enamel bands containing paillons of gold wavescrolls alternating with simulated pearls, the gold mounts stamped with stylized acanthus, plain gold rims
