A LOUIS XVI JAPANESE LACQUER AND VARI-COLOUR GOLD SNUFF-BOX
by Barthélémy Pillieux (fl. 1774-1790), marked, Paris, 1779/1780, with the charge and discharge marks of Jean-Baptiste Fouache, later French control marks
Octagonal box, the cover, sides, corners and base inset with panels of Japanese hiramaki-e gold and silver lacquer on a nashiji ground applied with kirikane, depicting 'The Three Friends': the pine tree, the plum tree and the bamboo tree; cranes on front and rear sides, the others sides decorated with symbols and leaves, lid and left-hand side wall furthermore decorated with a mon; the gold rims on cover and base chased with a ribbon-twist band, the sides of the base chased in two-colour gold with a wavy laurel wreath interspersed with flowerheads, the eight side pilasters engraved as fluted columns hung with laurel festoons, gold lined
