Lot Essay

Mathieu Guillaume Cramer, matre in 1771

This elegant bonheur-du-jour is embellished with delicate floral trellis parquetry, which was employed by Cramer on numerous occasions. It features on two similar bonheurs-du-jour, one sold from the collection of the Marquis de Biron at Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 9-11 June 1914, lot 366, the other sold by the Executors of the Late Mrs Gabrielle Keiller, at Christie's London, 4 July 1996, lot 277. This type of marquetry was also used by Cramer on two writing-tables, one sold anonymously at Palais Galliera, Paris, 28 November 1972, lot 142, the other from the collection of M. Akkram Ojjeh, sold Sotheby's Monaco, 25 June 1979, lot 160. A further related bureau plat, attributed to Cramer, formerly in the collections of Mrs Derek Fitzgerald and then Jaime Ortiz-Patino, was sold at Christie's Monaco, 20 June 1994, lot 307.
