Lot Essay

Charles-François, Baron de Malvoisin, was Brigadier of the Dragoons and colonel of the 13th regiment of the Dragoons (the regiment of the Comte de Provence). He was one of the first victims of the French Revolution.
Stanislas Xavier, Comte de Provence (called 'Monsieur'), was the second surviving grandson of King Louis XV (see lot 735) and thus the younger brother of King Louis XVI of France. He emigrated in 1791 and proclaimed himself King in 1795 but was not restored to his throne until 1814. After Napoleon's return from Elba, he emigrated again but ruled after Waterloo from 1815 until his death in 1824.
