The present example cartel d'applique is based on an 18th century prototype consisting of a separate clock and barometer. One example of the pair, formerly at the château de Saint-Cloud, is now in the Louvre (cat. nos. 392 and 393). Another pair is in the Musée Nissim de Camondo, Paris (cat. no. 151).
A similar clock and companion barometer by Alfred Beurdeley was sold Christie's London, 25 May 2000, lot 126 (£42,300).
See lot 429 for a note on Sormani.
