Arsinoe III married her brother Ptolemy IV and in 209 B.C. gave birth to a son, the future Ptolemy V, the first child born of a marriage between brother and sister in the Ptolemaic dynasty. Arsinoe is generally portrayed as intelligent and cultivated, close to the mathematician Eratosthenes whereas her husband is portrayed by Polybius and Plutarch as a debauched alcoholic.
