These mounted vases are after a popular model created by the celebrated French metal-worker, Pierre Gouthière (1740 - 1806) in 1780. He is known to have produced many of the most splendid belongings of the duchesse de Mazarin, Madame du Barry and the duc d'Aumont. The collection of the duc d'Aumont was sold at auction in Paris in 1782 and many objects mounted by Gouthière were bought for Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. His works, unsurpassed in creativity, quality and execution, can now be found in the Wallace Collection and the Louvre.
