Ransome's of Ipswich, the oldest lawn-mower manufacturer in the world, made the Patent Chain Automaton from 1897 until about 1930; one of the most popular mowers on the market, it was made in nine sizes, from 8-inch to 24-inch. This model is based on the technical details of the 12-inch version, although its 2-inch cylinder would thus be 1/6th. scale, making the handles a mere 25½ inches from the ground! A feature of the Patent Automaton was its double helix cylinder, which has been simplified to a single helix on the model. (Even then the geometry has been simplified, so that the blades are cutting on their trailing (obtuse) edge at the left-hand end.) The model-maker was Francis Wrentham Korn; the Model Engineer award is thought to date from the 1920s.
