A mother-of-pearl inlaid black lacquered two-tiered box and cover, 16th/17th century of square-section with indented corners, tapering at the lower tier, supported on a short spreading foot, decorated on the sides and cover with quatrelobed cartouches reserved on a cash diaper ground variously enclosing a long-tail bird amidst clouds, auspicious emblems, figures in a fenced garden, amidst bamboo, at rest and before a shrine, and chrysanthemum sprays, with foliate sprays on the shaped foot, the interiors black lacquered -- 6¼in. (15.8cm.) high.
