Joachim, Baron van Plettenberg, the embroideress' husband, was 'Gouverneur' of the Cape for the Verenigde Vostindische Compagnie: governor of the Dutch East Indian Trading Company, VOC circa 1770-1773. In South Africa there still is a Plettenberg Bay and other sights named after him.
