A PAINTED FAN
The leaf painted with the king of the insects offering a butterfly princess his crown, with an insect garde-à-corps and various pairs of ladybirds, wasps and may flies dancing together, with a crowned rook, owl, wren, robin, and lapwing bottom right with an open book with indistinct signature MCDG (?), with mother of pearl piqué sticks, the reverse painted with flowers spelling the name 'Margaret'

A related Parisian fan, decorated with fairy figures and dated to the 1890s, is in the Royal Collection (see Jane Roberts, Unfolding Pictures; Fans in the Royal Collection, London, 2005, no. 77).
