Late 18th early 19th Century, after Franois Casanova
Woven in wools and silks, both almost certainly from the series Les Convois Militaires, one depicting a soldier seated on a rocky outcrop, flanked by a dog and before him with a further soldier on horseback, the background with a mountainous landscape with a couple on a hill, the other with a soldier seated by a rock, before him a seated maiden and to the right with a peasant loading a horse, and with a goat, set within a mountainous landscape, each reduced from a larger tapestry panel, minor reweaving and patching, now mounted on board

The same panel was illustrated twice. This lot is composed of two panels of the same series, but differing subjects.

Lot Essay

These tapestry panels almost certainly belong to a series entitled Les Convois Militaires after Franois Casanova (d. 1802). Six tapestries from the series were supplied to the King in 1787 while a further four are recorded as having been were woven in 1793. In additon eight fauteuil backs and seats as well as two screens and two settee backs are recorded as having been commissioned during this period (J. Badin, La Manufacture de Tapisseries de Beauvais, Paris, 1909, p. 65).

Four panels composed of the series Les Bohmiens and Les Convois Militaires from the property of Lady Baillie [+] were sold Sotheby's London, 13 December 1974, lot 60.
