The tables palm-wrapped trusses, terminating in lion monopodiae reflect the antique or Roman fashion promoted by Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807. The 'economy' gained from the use of iron for furniture was stressed in J. C. Loudon's Encyclopedia of Cottage, Farm and Villa Architecture, 1833 (no. 1376 and fig. 1249). Such monopodia also featured in contemporary staircase rails.
