Love's universal power is celebrated by Cupids aiming their weapons from globe-capped altars. Amongst the leading Parisian manufacturers of such bronze candelabra was Claude-Francois Rabiat (d.1815) of the rue Beaubourg (see D. Ledoux-Lebard, 'Rabiat', L'Estampille, April, 1991, pp. 86-93). The inscription 'garde a vous' appeared on one of the clocks listed in the inventory of his stock in 1815 (see D. Ledoux-Lebard, ibid., pp. 86-93). The same inscription appears on a pair of candelabra of similar pattern which was sold at Christie's New York, 30 March 1995, lot 82 (,875).
