Lot Essay

The celebrated original model from which these chenets are derived is first recorded in a 1755 inventory taken from the workshop of Jacques Caffieri. An inventory of his son Philippe's workshop in 1770, lists models for "un feu chien et chat". Philippe Caffieri supplied a pair of chenets featuring a cat and poodle to the Prince de Cond in 1773, at a cost of 1, 120 livres.
