These candlesticks can be related to designs by Louis Prieur of circa 1775, which were further interpreted by Jean-François Forty in circa 1780 in his 'Oeuvres de Sculpture en Bronze. Contenant Girandoles, Flambeaux, Feux, Pendules, Bras, Cartels, Baromètres, Inventées et Dessinées par J.F.F'. (H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel, et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p. 288, figs. 4.16.1 and 4.16.2).
A closely related pair of candlesticks was sold, Christie's, London, 23 June 1999, lot 12, and another 7 July 2005, lot 428.
