    Lot Essay

Probably named cats bacause they always remain upright, the concept of the cat dates from the mid-18th Century when they are thought to have supported plates or dishes to keep warm in a fireplace. Although this may well be true for the earlier brass cats, it would however seem now probable that the wooden examples, often made from mahogany or ebony, were placed on a table.
