These parlour chairs are based on a design of circa 1767 by the Berkeley Square cabinet-maker, John Linnell (d. 1796), which survives in an album preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Linnell supplied two sets of chairs based on the design to Robert Child for Upton House, Oxfordshire. Twelve of the Child chairs were sold by the Executors of the late Dr. Eric Till, Christie's, London, 14 June 2001, lot 20, and another twelve, slightly plainer, were sold anonymously, Sotheby's, London, 15 November 1996, lot 61.
A related design for an intertwined ribbon-back parlour chair was illustrated in A Society of Upholsterers, Genteel Household Furniture in the Present Taste, 2nd ed., c. 1765, pl. 3.
