Sale room notice
The possible attribution to Wright and Elwick is strengthened by a closely comparable pair of torcheres that were sold from the H.J.Joel Collection, Childwickbury, Christie's House sale, 15 May 1978, lot 75, and again at Sotheby's New York, 19-20 April 2001, lot 541. The Joel pair have scroll feet on gadrooned pads, an unusual feature shared with the torcheres firmly attributed to Wright and Elwick which were sold in the Wentworth sale, in these Rooms, 8 July 1998, lot 34.

Lot Essay

The design of these vase or candelabra stands, with picturesque serpentined and voluted claws, is derived from a pattern for Candle Stands in Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 3rd. ed., 1762, pl. CXLVI. The simplified construction and addition of recessed elongated quatrefoil panels relates to the work in Chippendale's style of the Wakefield firm of Wright and Elwick, such as on several of the lots in the Wentworth sale at Christie's, 8 July 1998, including the great cabinet, lot 35. See also the footnote to lot 165 in this sale.
