This form of altar tripod torchere relates to designs by Thomas Hope illustrated in his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, pls. IX and XIX, no. 1. The model was obviously produced in both metal and giltwood as other examples are known: a bronze and giltmetal torchere with dish in the top sold Sotheby's, Norfolk, 11 October 1994, lot 259 and a giltwood torchere sold anonymously, Sotheby's, London, 21 February 1997, lot 196. The latter was previously in the collection of Mrs A. E. Roach. An almost identical torchere is illustrated in H. Cescinsky, English Furniture of the Eighteenth Century, London, n.d., vol. III, p. 19, fig. 5. A pair of Regency cast-iron colza lamps on similar torchere stands, was sold anonymously, Sotheby's, London, 13 June 2001, lot 147.
Both the present lot and an identical one in a private collection come from Ireland, so there is a possibly that they are Irish.
