    Lot Essay

The golden chinoiserie carvings are similar to elements of the famous set of carvings from Ditchley Park, Oxfordshire, introduced as part of the enrichments of the room carried out in the late 1740's by the 3rd Earl of Lichfield (d. 1762) and attributed to William Linnell. A pair of girandoles with blackamoor figures, which formed part of the carvings, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 12 March 1981, lot 12, while further elements of the Ditchley carvings were sold anonymously [Property of a European Foundation], Christie's New York, 18 October 2002, lot 325 ($163,500).
