A PAIR OF HUANGHUALI LOW BACK CHAIRS, MEIGUIYI

Each chair has a straight toprail, and corners with diagonal spandrels. The straight arms also bear diagonal spandrels. The soft mat seat has a wide frame and the legs have a rectangular pattern apron, joined by low stretchers.

Lot Essay

The meiguiyi, 'rose chair', was first popular in the Ming dynasty for its light construction and elegant appearance. The form is also known as a wenyi, 'writing chair' in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, but neither of these terms appear before the 20th century.
