A PAIR OF ITALIAN NEOCLASSIC GREEN-PAINTED AND PARCEL-GILT TORCHERES
Late 18th Century
Each mirror-inset circular top with molded edge and shell and adorsed acanthus scrolling frieze above a stop-fluted convex bottom suspending a pine cone finial, on ribbon-wrapped bunched C-scroll legs headed by lions masks resting on a circular upper tier, the S-scrolled lower legs similarly ribbon-wrapped and headed with inscrolled and leaf-wrapped angles joined by an incurved tripartite lower tier centered by a pine cone finial and terminating in lions paw feet on a later incurved tripartite base

Lot Essay

The tamed lion-mask, reeded bowl and claw feet of these torcheres in the 'Antique' manner relate to a 1795 Florentine design for a 'Candeliere d'Argento' (see Magazzino Di Mobilia O Sieno Modelli Di Mobili di Ogni Genere Num. 1, Ottobre 1795, Firenze, Marie Cristina Tonelli, Ed. Florence, 1981, pl. IV, no. 10). An identical torchere, with label inscribed du magasin Pal..., Antiquities, Rue Rondinelli, Florence was sold Bonhams, London, 19 March 1992, lot 61.
