from President Cleveland given to a captain, with alligator skin covering, lignum vitae focus knob, signed on the left and right eye cup, and inscribed 'FROM/THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES/TO/Captain W. Thompson/OF THE/BRITISH SS DURHAM CITY/FOR HIS HUMANE SERVICES/IN EFFECTING THE RESCUE/OF THE OFFICERS AND CREW/OF THE AMERICAN SCHOONER ALICE T. BOARDMAN/OCTOBER 6 1894'.
