This pair is close to a group of consoles dating from circa 1755, a number of which are illustrated B.G.B. Pallot, L'Art du siège au XVIIIème siècle, Paris, 1987, pp. 155-157. These include one sold by the 7th Earl of Rosebery, Mentmore Towers, sold Sotheby's House Sale, 20 May 1977, lot 102, another from the Patiño Collection, sold Sotheby's, New York, 1 November 1986, lot 64 and another sold Christie's, London, 4 December 1986, lot 96.
The form is close to the designs of the architect Pierre Contant d'Ivry (1698-1777) to whom this group has largely been attributed.
The life and work of this menuisier is unknown, although he may have been the son of Jean-Baptiste Lalbertault, maître menuisier in Paris who lived in the rue de la Licorne in the early 18th Century.
