Designed in the 'antique' manner of the 1780's, the nymphs draped la Chiton, these candelabra are of almost identical model to those inscribed 'Clodion' in the Cleveland Museum of Art (42.59). Undoubtedly cast from a model by Claude-Michel, dit Clodion (1738-1814) and formerly in the collection of Sir Richard Wallace, the Cleveland candelabra are illustrated in H. Ottomeyer/P. Prschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, p.284, fig. 4.14.2.
An unattributed design of circa 1785 depicting two nymphs flanking an urn, that on the right portrayed in a very similar vein, is illustrated in H. Ottomeyer/P. Prschel et al., op.cit., p. 284, fig. 4.14.10.
