This design is based on fifteenth century Chenghua prototypes, such as the one illustrated by J. Ayers, Far Eastern Ceramics in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1980, col. pl. 49; and two other examples, one from the Winkworth Collection, illustrated by S. Jenyns, Ming Pottery and Porcelain, London, 1953, pl. 62B, and one by A. Joseph, Ming Porcelains, London, 1971, p. 53, no. 40, the latter subsequently sold in our London rooms, 14 December 1982, lot 175.
A similar Qianlong-marked example was sold in our London rooms, 10 June 1996, lot 95, while a pair of Daoguang-marked examples was sold at Sotheby's, Hong Kong, 14 November 1989, lot 105.
