A PAIR OF OLD SHEFFIELD PLATE MEAT-DISH COVERS AND TWO MEAT-DISHES
THE COVERS WITH THE MARK OF MATTHEW BOULTON, BIRMINGHAM, ONE MEAT DISH WITH THE MARK OF T.& J. CRESWICK, SHEFFIELD, THE OTHER APPARENTLY UNMARKED, LATE 19TH CENTURY
The covers oval and with moulded rim below gadrooned band, with detachable reeded scroll, foliage and lion's mask handles, one meat-dish shaped oval with reeded rim, the other oval with egg-and-dart rim, the covers and the shaped meat-dish each engraved with a coat-of-arms and a crest, the other meat-dish engraved with a differing crest, the covers marked inside, one meat-dish marked on the reverse
the meat-dishes - 20 in. (50.5 cm.) long and 18 3/8 in. (46.7 cm.) long
The arms on the dish covers and one meat-dish are those of Smith impaling Chatfield for Samuel George Smith (1789-1863) of Goldings, co. Herts and his wife Eugenia (d.1838), third daughter of the Rev. Robert Chatfield, whom he married in 1821. His uncle, Robert Smith (1752-1838), was created 1st Baron Carrington in 1796.
The differing crest is that of Gardiner, as granted to Robert Gardiner of Lancashire on 15 April 1549. (4)
