The fashion for bamboo in the latter part of the 18th century was highlighted by Sheraton in his Cabinet Dictionary of 1803, who described how it was imitated in England by turning beech into the same form (and) painting them to match the colours of the reeds and cane. In this case the style is combined with the trellis chair back so widespread at the time, again described by Sheraton in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, various editions.
