Each with a fret-carved gallery above pierced Chinese paling on splayed legs, the underside with paper labels inscribed '66 D.H.M', one with a further label inscribed 'M', some old repairs and minor losses

Lot Essay

The design for the stands is likely to have been inspired by a 1753 'Candle-stand' pattern 'composed of fretwork' in the 'Chinese taste', that Thomas Chippendale published in The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754 (pl.120 B).
