The antiquarian design of these chairs relates to the engraved designs by Daniel Marot which circulated throughout Europe in the late 18th and early 19th centuries (see: E. Dee, Printed Sources for the William and Mary Style, in R. Baarsen et al., Courts and Colonies, 1988, p. 80-85). A similar chair is illustrated in C. Gilbert, Fruniture at Temple Newsam and Lotherton Hall, vol. II, 1978, p. 108, no. 108. The set at Temple Newsam consists of one 17th century chair and several 19th century copies.
