A PRECLASSIC MAYAN JADE PENDANT Izapa (?), ca. 300-100 B.C. Possibly once attached to a scepter, in the form of a jaguar's head with bared fangs, deeply drilled, flaring snout, sunken eyes probably inlaid and ears pressed tightly to the side; in grey-green Olmec jade, with a projecting, pierced tenon at the back for the attachment. Height 2 1/4 in. (5.5 cm.)
