The title 1st Aberdeen Volunteers was used by the regiment only from 1803 to 1808. The date-letter of the hallmark is g, which would indicate either Birmingham 1804 or Edinburgh 1812. The maker's mark is SP which may indicate Samuel Pemberton, a Birmingham silversmith who was entered in 1784. This would indicate that the 1804 date is more probable.
Thomas Burnell appears in the 1804 Yeomanry and Volunteer List as a Captain in the 1st Aberdeen, with seniority from 21st May 1803.
