Joe Harold Anthony Hulme, reputedly the fastest player of his time, spent the majority of his career playing with Arsenal where he played outside-right and earned a reputation as an acute passer of the ball and having a wonderful shot.
Born in Stafford in 1904, Hulme began his playing career with Stafford YMCA before turning professional with York City in 1923. In 1924 he signed for Blackburn Rovers [£250] and then signed for Arsenal in February 1926 [£3,500]. During his twelve years with the club, he helped the Gunners win the Division I Championship fives times and participated in four F.A. Cup finals, winning two [1930 and 1936] and losing two [1927 and 1932].
In 1938 he joined Huddersfield Town and played in the F.A. Cup final of that year, before retiring and taking up the position as Tottenham Hotspur assistant secretary in 1944 before becoming the club's manager from 1945-49. After leaving Spurs, he worked as a Sports journalist before retiring in 1965.
