Cleverly carved with a large spider seated atop a recumbent tiger, with paws outstretched and mouth open, its head turned to one side to gaze at a small toad at its feet, beside a large scorpion and snake curled around its tail

Lot Essay

The five poisonous creatures represent the 'five poisons' (wudu), and it was commonly believed that one could ward off the potential negative influences caused by these by possessing a charm which incorporates their imagery.
