There are a number of medallion designs for this type of tray. Its shape can be traced back to the silver wares imported from the Sasanian Empire (224-651 A.D.) and the Sogdian Empire (6 B.C.- 11 A.D.). A similar example in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, but with a single-head bird-like motif impressed at the centre (accession number: 14.66), is published in ‘Highlights of Chinese Ceramics’, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin, New York, v. 33, no. 3, Fall, 1975, p. 127. Compare also another auction example sold at Christie’s London, 7 June 1993, lot 29, with a similar medallion design.
