The Property of a Gentleman
The two following lots are offered for sale by the great-grandson of champion shot Walter Winans, and have passed down to him by direct descent
Walter Winans (1852-1920), although born in Russia, was an American citizen who spent much of his life in this country. An accomplished sportsman, rider, artist and sculptor, he is best remembered for his skill with pistol and rifle, for which he was awarded copious trophies and medals (including Olympic gold), and held several world records. Author of seven books on shooting, including The Art of Revolver Shooting (1901), and The Sporting Rifle (1908), Winans was an avid game hunter on an international scale, as well as supplying venison for the troops in World War I. He died while competing in a trotting race near Ilford. A tribute published by The Shooting Times recorded that "It is rare indeed to find one who combined such versatility with such conspicuous success as Mr. Walter Winans".
During his lifetime Winans possessed a number of muzzle-loading pistols, including outstanding highly decorated examples by Gastinne-Renette of Paris, at whose galleries he was duelling pistol champion - some are illustrated in The Art of Revolver Shooting
