A rare Court Fan, the leaf painted with a market scene, the borders decorated with straw-work and applied with silk flowers, the verso with vignettes against a Chinoiserie trompe l'oeil, the ivory sticks finely carved and pierced with figures, and with a fore-edge carving of a dragon entwined round the sticks when closed, the guardsticks set with red, green and white paste and moss-agate, the pivot with a compartment - 11in. (28cm.), English, circa 1750 (compartment lacks lower cover)

The vendor is a direct descendant of James Christie (1730-1803) founder of Christie's in 1766. This fan may well have belonged to his wife.
