This rare pottery vessel is based on 6th century BC bronze prototypes of provincial origin, such as the comparably tall bronze dou (40 cm. high) with tall stem foot and domed cover with three ring handles from Shandong Qingdao, illustrated by J. So, Eastern Zhou Ritual Bronzes from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, The Arthur M. Sackler Foundation, 1995, p. 191, fig. 27.1. The author notes that the combination of ring handles rather than a crown on the domed cover, and the unusually tall stem foot of the bronze dou are suggestive of provincial manufacture.
