This watch is a rare survival of an early Blois/Paris type decorated watch with its original movement and in a good state of preservation. For a similar example by this maker see: Tardy, Dictionnaire Des Horlogers Francais, p.267.
THE JUDGEMENT OF PARIS
The decoration of this watch illustrates the well known story of Paris, the son of King Priam of Troy, who has to judge three goddesses in a beauty contest. The victor of which would claim a golden apple inscribed "to the fairest". The three contestants were Juno, Minerva and Venus. This part of the story is illustrated on the cover of the watch.
Paris eventually chose Venus after she promised him the love of any woman he desired. Unfortunately the woman he desired was Helen, wife of the King of Sparta and, after succeeding in abducting her, brought her back to Troy. An act which provoked the Trojan war. The back of the watch depicts the arrival of Helen and Paris at Troy.
