See W. R. Sargent, The Copeland Collection, Chinese and Japanese Ceramic Figures, p.107, fig.49, for nearly an identical figure which was originally one of a pair. The author suggests that these figures may be based on French fashion plates of about 1700, possibly engravings by Bonnart of members of the Royal family. This male figure is often referred to as 'the Dauphin'. Compare the pair illustrated in Howard & Ayers, China for the West, London, 1978, pp 580-581, no. 601.
