Comprising sash badge in gold, the central head-dress motif within concentric ovals of seed pearls and suspended from an enamelled wreath of paulownia flowers and leaves; the breast star in silver-gilt, the gold centre within concentric bands of seed pearls and the five arms set with graduated pearls of varying size
11.5cm. high (including ribbon) and 6.4cm. diam. respectively

Lot Essay

The First Class of the Order of the Sacred Crown is reserved for the Empress, Imperial Princesses and the wives of visiting sovereigns. Prior to 2003 in rare cases it was awarded to women who had made a great contribution to Japan, including Margaret Thatcher.
