The inscription may be read:
Feng lai hua chen wu chun shan niao neng yan yue xia mei ren lai.
And may be translated:
'As the wind blows, the flowers begin to dance. In the spring the birds start to sing in the mountains. Under the moonlit sky the beauties gather.'
A similar cup in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, illustrated by P.J. Donnelly, Blanc de Chine, New York, 1969, pl. 24 C, where it is dated 1650-1700, is inscribed with an inscription referring to it as a nuptial wine cup (translation p. 262).
