Arguably the most significant Spanish Art Nouveau jeweler, Luis Masriera was the son of a painter and goldsmith. Having taken over the family jewelry firm in Barcelona, he went to study at the Geneva Académie des Beaux Arts, under the famous enamellist, Lossier. After visiting Lalique's display at the International Exhibition in 1900, Masriera returned to Barcelona and began creating jewels in the Art Nouveau style. Wagner's operas were extremely popular in Spain when the Isolde pendant was made by Masriera. Inspired by Wagner's affair with Mathilde Wesendonck, the basic theme of Tristan and Isolde is forbidden love; the story comes from a thirteenth century medieval romance by Gottfried von Strassburg.
