A similarly-marked bowl from the Victoria and Albert Museum is illustrated by Clifford in Chinese Carved Lacquer, p. 121, pl. 95a. A Qianlong-marked bowl and cover with medallions enclosing birthday greetings is illustrated by Garner, Chinese Lacquer, pl. 92.
These bowls appear to have been inspired by popular blue and white porcelain bowls of this design such as the pair in the Roemer Museum, Hildesheim, illustrated in the Ohlmer Collection, Catalogue, nos. 63 and 64.
Cf. also a saucer dish painted with the same basic pattern, dated 1786, illustrated by Garner, Oriental Blue and White, p. 50, fig. 79B.
