The decoration on the present jar seems to be an adaptation of a Ming dynasty pattern. See Sir Harry Garner, Oriental Blue and White, London, 1977, col. pl. 2, for a Xuande jar with a similarly painted lotus scroll.
This pair of jars is unusual in that they still retain their covers. Other similar jars without covers have been sold in our Hong Kong rooms: a single jar, 29 May 2007, lot 1461 and two others, 30 October 1995, lots 656 and 656A. See, also, the jar from the T.Y. Chao Collection, sold Sotheby's, Hong Kong, 18 November 1986, lot 75.
