This jersey is believed to have been worn by Alex James in the 1936 F.A. Cup final between Arsenal and Sheffield United which the Gunners won 1-0.
An extract from Tom Whittaker's Arsenal Story recalls the lead-up to the goal which gave Arsenal the trophy. "Fourteen minutes from time came the goal which gave us the cup...Alex slipped the ball through along the line to Cliff Bastin, who in an instant squared it to the fast-moving Drake. Ted with Johnson breathing down his neck, and Alex yelling, "it's all yours Ted," went one way, came back again, and hit a beautiful left foot shot passed the diving Smith into the net... and so we won, and once the cup and medals had been presented, the players raced for the dressing-room, Alex James clutching the precious trophy".
The vendor of this jersey purchased it from a gentleman in Preston who was given it by a friend, whose father was in turn presented with it whilst chef at Preston's Bull and Royal Hotel where the Arsenal players used to stay. On presenting the chef with the jersey Alex James confirmed that he had worn it during the 1936 F.A. Cup final.
