Lot Essay

David Spinner (1758-1811) was born in Milford Township, Bucks County, the son of Ulrich Spinner of Switzerland. He apprenticed with potter Johannes Neis (1754-1826) until he inherited his family's land in 1781. Though Spinner employed the same light-yellow slip ground layer that Neis used, there are distinct differences in the manner in which Spinner executed his leaves, vines and flowers. This plate is a rare signed example.
