Lot Essay

The raised back on this table would indicate that the intended function would be to serve as a washstand. Interesting to note however is the hinged lidded compartment to the rear of the top which is very similar to 'chamber' writing-tables supplied in 1811 to T.W. Egerton for Tatton Park, Cheshire. A further table of this design was supplied in 1813 to Willian Powlett, 2nd Baron Bolton, for Hackwood Park, Hampshire and sold from The Estate of The 2nd Viscount Camrose, Christie's, Hackwood Park, 20-22 April 1999, lot 366.
